Solving the skilled labour shortage: Mono’s career development programs

Mono solutions - Lump sum

Many Australian industries have been plagued by a skilled labour shortage for years, and the construction industry has been particularly affected.

Finding a solution that offers long-term security to employees, businesses and the wider industry is essential.

At Mono, we believe our apprenticeship and cadetship program not only provides a sustainable solution, but a long-term commitment to our employees and their careers.

Why is there a skilled labour shortage?

The skilled labour shortage has arisen from a complex web of factors, such as training limitations, industrial relations, immigration procedures and employer expectations.

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated disruptions to training and migration has exacerbated the problem, with a new report by Infrastructure Australia warning that the Australian construction industry could be facing one of the worst skills shortages in decades.

The Market Capacity report predicts that recruiters will struggle to find skilled workers for one in three industry jobs, such as engineers, joiners and architects – by as early as 2023.

And this shortage is predicted to get worse with around a third of the current infrastructure workforce expected to retire in the coming 15 years.

A sustainable solution

While the Australian Chamber of Commerce and many within the industry have cried out for a dramatic increase in Australia’s skilled migration program, this solution only offers a quick fix to an ongoing problem.

Attracting skilled migrants to Australia can be difficult, due to international competition, shorter waiting periods in other destinations and issues relating to the actual migration process (border closures, visa applications etc.).

Many believe that encouraging Australians who are enrolled in courses linked to apprenticeships, cadetships and traineeships (which have increased by 35% in the past two years) offers a more sustainable, long-term solution.

Mono’s cadetships and apprenticeships

At Mono, we believe that investing in our people yields the greatest results for our business.

Our cadetships and apprenticeships are some of our greatest investments, where we nurture and support those entering the industry in becoming skilled, qualified and ethical professionals.

Alisia Hanna, a Mono Contracts Administrator Cadet, is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Construction Management and Property.

She is thriving in the program and finding it incredibly useful in integrating theory with practice. Alisia says: “Not only has Mono has provided me with an opportunity to enter the construction industry and gain practical experience in contracts administration and onsite operations, but it really helps me consolidate the concepts I learn in my undergraduate studies, with those I’m learning in the industry.”

Designed for those who are undertaking tertiary or vocational training, our trainees benefit from: mentorship from experienced professionals; earning while learning; career development opportunities upon completion; ongoing training and support – now and into the future.

And we don’t just take on construction professionals. Louise Khattar, who commence with Mono in 2018 as an office administrator, is currently completing the Certificate IV in Human Resources. She echoes Alisia’s sentiments, saying: “Mono has supported and encouraged my training and professional development in the human resources function by providing practical work experience and on-the-job training while I complete my qualifications.”

With both standard and adult cadetships and apprenticeships available, we believe these paid, entry-level opportunities have the ability to lay the foundation for a thriving career, while also providing the necessary practical industry experience.

Opportunities include:

  • Site Cadetships
  • Administrative Cadetships
  • Trade Apprenticeships
