A well-oiled machine: our successful collaboration with Statewide Civil for Blacktown Leisure Centre

Multiple red warehouse

The Blacktown Leisure Centre has been a community hub for nearly 20 years, attracting over 15 million visitors since it opened in 2003 in Stanhope Gardens.

So when Statewide Civil was engaged by Blacktown City Council for improvement works, they understood the importance of this project, not just to the client, but to the wider community.

As a civil works specialist with a well-established and trusted name in the industry, Statewide Civil needed a similarly reputable construction partner for the project.

We spoke to Michael Dominello, Director of Statewide Civil, about the project and why they chose Mono as their construction partner.

Multisport - use facility

A trusted construction partner

As Blacktown City Council’s flagship leisure facility, the project included 16 plexicushion courts designed for multi-sport use, a stadium, LED lighting, change rooms with toilet facilities, a children’s play area, plus additional rooms for administration, events and meetings.

The multi-sport stadium, which is equipped for basketball, netball, soccer, volleyball and badminton, also welcomes corporate events, trade shows and exhibitions, with seating for 300 people.

“Statewide Civil was engaged to construct the civil component of the project,” Michael explains.

“That included the 16 tennis courts, two car parks, internal and external roads, and the electrical components of the civil infrastructure works.

But we needed to bring on a specialist construction firm to build the indoor multipurpose courts and stadium, and the other large construction components of the project.”

When describing the tender process, Michael explained that Mono stood out from the beginning.

“The team at Mono was very professional from the start,” Michael explains.

“They were forthcoming with information during the tender process and their presentation was very professional.

But one of the biggest things I like about the Mono team is that they’re a family business with family values, which really resonated with the values of Statewide Civil.”

Shared values

It was these values that Michael believes made the project such a success.

“Our two companies are very aligned in terms of our values,” Michael says.

“We are both committed to looking after our staff and their safety, and really treating them like family,” he explains.

“For example, while it was one project, there was a clear line between construction and civil areas, which has the potential to cause issues.

But we really worked well together in keeping the site as safe as possible. It was seamless.”

A technical specialist

Coupling these core values with their technical expertise, Mono was able to provide important support to the Statewide Civil team.

“They were able to see the bigger picture, and see what we were trying to achieve, and they always had our back,” Michael says.

“And they weren’t just great on the ground, they were just as good in the supportive role with the client.

They were happy and willing to sit down with the client and explain any technical construction issues, which was really helpful.”

A well-oiled machine

When asked about any advice Michael would give other companies considering working with Mono, Michael attested to Mono’s professionalism:

“Mono is a very well-oiled machine, particularly in terms of paperwork and the administration side of things.

They take an extremely professional approach to everything they do.

We’ve worked with them again since then and it has been one of the most collaborative partnerships we’ve experienced.

If other companies are doing a larger project that Mono is happy to entertain, I would recommend they do their best to get Mono on board. They’re a great company to work with.”
